High Roding, Essex

All Saints is another locked church but since it has no near neighbours this is understandable but, as with the other churches in this benefice, there's no sign of a key-holder which is irritating! As it is I can only offer some exterior shots.

ALL SAINTS. C13 nave and chancel, and C19 bellcote. Stone S porch of c. 1400. - FONT. Octagonal, Perp, with quatrefoils with shields. - N door with C13 ironwork. - PULPIT with traceried panels of c. 1500. - STAINED GLASS. Small bits in several windows, mostly C14. - PLATE. Paten of 1562; Cup of 1562 with chased band; Dish probably of 1697.

However judging from Mee's scant entry I obviously did not miss much.

HIGH RODING. It has many gabled and thatched houses in its street, and a great pond between the churchyard and an old farmhouse. The church has been here 700 years, and the ironwork on the doors is as old as the stones. The doorways are small, and we may wonder how they carried in the massive medieval font, with delicately carved panelling. The pulpit has kept it company most of the time. There was a rich scene of colour in the window by the pulpit when it was new; all that is left now is an angel swinging a censer vigorously in the smallest of the tracery lights.

  1. We were able to go inside as church was not locked. This maybe because work was being carried out. May 2014
