Leavenheath, Suffolk

I think I'm going to sound unduly harsh about St Matthew but unfortunately it can't be helped. A Victorian built church (it's little more than a chapel really)with a staggeringly ugly tower tacked on to the side this has almost nothing of merit about it except...in the nave is a collection of original wooden war grave crosses each with a photograph of the fallen. They've also kept this going with little wooden poppy crosses and photos of more recent losses.

It's an extraordinary, and poignant, sight and one I've not seen before. So that, and the fact that the church was open, saves St Matthew from being a total loss.

ST MATTHEW. 1835 by G. Russell French. Chancel, S tower, S aisle, etc., by Satchell & Edwards, 1882-3. Rather terrible, so close to Nayland and Stoke-by-Nayland.

Leavenheath is another of those rare beasts that Mee missed.
